“Being on stage is where I come alive”: Acting student awarded Laurence Olivier bursary

6 July 2026

A second-year student is this year’s recipient of the Laurence Olivier bursary for aspiring actors

A Manchester School of Theatre student has been awarded the Laurence Olivier Bursary 2026, recognising her talent as a promising emerging actor.

Bonnie Lowden, who has just completed her second year of a BA (Hons) Acting degree at Manchester Met, will receive the £500 bursary towards her final year of study.

The bursary is awarded annually by the Society of London Theatre and The Theatre Development Trust to support drama school students in their final year of training.

Bonnie was selected following a competitive audition process in London, where she performed two monologues and took part in an interview with an industry panel.

Speaking about the experience, Bonnie said: “I heard about the bursary through one of my lecturers who nominated me, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I travelled to London to audition, performing two monologues and speaking with the panel.

“It was such a valuable experience to spend the day alongside so many talented students from drama schools across the country.”

Originally from Devon, Bonnie discovered her passion for acting through school productions and local drama groups. Bonnie said: “I realised in secondary school how much I loved performing. Being on stage felt natural, and it’s where I come alive. I never imagined I would have opportunities like this, which have all come from being part of the Manchester School of Theatre.”

As she prepares to enter her final year, Bonnie is looking ahead to industry showcases in both Manchester and London. Bonnie said: “I’m really excited for the final year showcases and the opportunity to perform in front of industry professionals. It’s a challenge I’m looking forward to embracing.”

In awarding the bursary, the Society of London Theatre panel said: “Thank you for performing your two pieces for us, we think you have great potential. On behalf of the judging panel and the Society of London Theatre, we would like to wish you every success in your final year and future career in the theatre industry.”

Professor Anna McNamara, Director of the Manchester School of Theatre, said: “We are delighted that Bonnie has been awarded the prestigious Laurence Olivier Bursary.  As a conservatoire, Manchester School of Theatre is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of creative artists, and Bonnie’s success reflects both her potential and the commitment she has demonstrated throughout her actor training. We look forward to supporting her as she enters her final year and prepares to launch her professional career.”
