Summer Courses 2012

With its long established reputation for training professional actors of the highest calibre – including Julie Walters, Anthony Sher, Steve Coogan, Amanda Burton, Richard Griffiths and David Threlfall, Burn Gorman, Deborah Stevenson, Zawe Ashton, John Thompson - the Manchester School of Theatre is delighted to announce details of the 2012 Summer Schools.

Aimed at aspiring actors as well as teachers and enthusiastic amateurs, this year's courses are designed to enable students to explore new ways of developing character, creating convincing relationships and working with a range of dramatic texts. Each course offers classes in movement and voice as well as the opportunity to work in close detail on a specific text.

Application and Fees

Students will be selected for each course on the basis of the information included in the booking form. Places are limited so early application is advised!

Introduction to Acting
25th June – 29th June 2012

Venue: Manchester School of Theatre in Manchester
Workshop Leaders: David Shirley and Niamh Dowling

This one week foundation will introduce participants to the basic principles of acting in realist/naturalistic drama. Workshop exercises will explore the need for physical transformation, listening and responding in the moment and developing an emotional life. Daily classes in movement and voice will serve to develop enhanced awareness and confidence.

Action, Body, Voice : Workshop at Theatre by the Lake
30th July – 3rd August 2012

Venue: Theatre by The Lake in Keswick
Times: Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm
Workshop Leaders: Gabriel Gawin, Niamh Dowling with guest Joe Windley

Set in the stunning surroundings of Theatre by The Lake in Keswick, this one week practical course focuses on the dynamic integration and interconnection of the core disciplines of the actor's craft, movement, voice and action.

Course Fee: £350.00

Clothing and Equipment

All students should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing in which they can move with ease and confidence. Copies of all texts used and items of furniture and props etc. will be provided by the School of Theatre.

Locations

Manchester School of Theatre is located in the Mabel Tylecote Building, on the corner of Cavendish Street and Oxford Road, and is part of the MMU All Saints complex. Manchester Piccadilly train station is approximately 15 minutes walk from the school. Alternatively, Oxford Road train station is a 5 minute walk from the school.

Theatre by the Lake is situated at Lakeside in Keswick with its famed views across Derwentwater, Borrowdale and the Western Fells. The theatre is a five minute walk from the town centre.
